National Tree Ambassador Never Bonde has urged Bulawayo residents and the nation to take meaningful action in conserving the environment, following this year’s National Tree Planting Day, celebrated every first Saturday of December.
Speaking to Skyz Metro FM, Bonde said this year’s commemorations are special, with good rains falling across the country, a welcome change from previous dry years.
Bonde stated that the rains are a reminder for communities to show gratitude by planting more trees and protecting the environment.
“This year is very different. We are receiving good rains as we celebrate, and that is something to be grateful for. Communities should show appreciation by planting more trees,” Bonde said.
This year’s official tree is the Umve, also known as Cordia Africana. Bonde encouraged every citizen to plant at least one tree, saying collective action is key to restoring Zimbabwe’s landscapes and strengthening climate resilience.
He added that tree planting should not be viewed as a once-off event, but a continuous commitment to protecting Zimbabwe’s natural heritage.
