Zimbabwe has stepped in to assist Malawi following devastating floods that struck the country late last year, leaving thousands in need of urgent support.

The emergency assistance was officially handed over yesterday in Harare at the Munhumutapa Building. Vice President, Colonel Retired Doctor K.C.D. Mohadi, presented the donation to Malawi’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, General Retired Peter Namathanga.

The support includes one thousand tonnes of grain from the Government of Zimbabwe, an additional fifteen tonnes from the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe, as well as blankets, tents, food and medical supplies donated by the private sector.

Vice President Mohadi said the assistance was critical, noting that the floods caused widespread destruction and stretched Malawi’s emergency response systems.

“The recent floods have, therefore, compounded an already overstretched response system, making prompt and coordinated intervention all the more imperative and urgent.

Our response today is guided not only by humanitarian considerations, but also by the deep historical, cultural, and social ties that bind Zimbabwe and Malawi. Our two nations share a common colonial past and a long history of people-to- people interaction,” he said.

He also highlighted the long-standing ties between Zimbabwe and Malawi, saying the gesture reflects regional solidarity and shared responsibility in times of crisis.
