Cimas Health Group has renamed its Bulawayo Medical Centre after medical pioneer Dr Sipho Leonard Vivian Zwana, in recognition of his contribution to Zimbabwe’s healthcare sector.

The facility has been renamed the Dr Sipho Zwana Medical Centre.

Speaking at the renaming ceremony today, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution in Bulawayo, Judith Ncube, commended Cimas for honouring Dr Zwana’s legacy.

Minister Ncube said the recognition should inspire medical practitioners in Bulawayo and future generations to uphold high standards in healthcare.

“Dr Zwana’s contribution to healthcare is an important part of our medical history. Honouring his work should inspire current and future medical practitioners to uphold excellence and serve communities with dedication.”

CIMAS CEO Mr Vulindlela Ndlovu said that Cimas Chief Executive Officer Vulindlela Ndlovu said the decision to rename the facility reflects the organisation’s commitment to preserving the legacy of medical pioneers.

“Renaming this facility is our way of preserving the legacy of a medical pioneer whose contribution has had a lasting impact on healthcare in Zimbabwe,” Ndlovu added.

Dr Zwana’s daughter, Thandeka Zwana, thanked Cimas for recognising her father’s contribution, saying the naming of the facility would help preserve his legacy for future generations.

“We are grateful to Cimas for recognising our father’s contribution. Having this facility carry his name means his legacy will continue to live on and inspire others,” Thandeka said.

Dr Zwana is credited with making history as Zimbabwe’s first Black anaesthetist and as the first Black doctor to work at Mpilo Hospital.

He spent 52 years in the healthcare sector before his retirement in 2013, with his work contributing to the development of Zimbabwe’s medical profession and healthcare services.
