Uganda has shut down internet and mobile data services nationwide, just two days before voters head to the polls in a highly contested election.
The government ordered telecommunications and internet providers to suspend public access from Tuesday evening, saying the move is meant to prevent the spread of misinformation, electoral manipulation, and public disorder during the voting period.
President Yoweri Museveni, now 81, is seeking a seventh term in office. He has ruled Uganda since 1986. His main challenger is opposition leader and musician Bobi Wine, whose campaign has drawn large crowds, particularly among young voters.
In recent days, security forces have arrested several of Bobi Wine’s supporters, while some of his rallies were dispersed using tear gas and live ammunition.
The internet shutdown has raised serious concerns among civil society groups and international observers, who fear it could undermine transparency and the credibility of the election.
