ZiG Usage Climbs Nationwide

Zimbabwe’s local currency, the ZiG, is steadily gaining ground, now accounting for between 30 and 40 percent of all payment transactions across the country.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe says the rising usage reflects growing public confidence in the currency and increased acceptance in everyday payments and domestic trade.

To support wider circulation, the central bank has directed commercial banks to keep at least three percent of ZiG deposits as cash and to improve access through ATMs and banking halls.

The RBZ reports that annual ZiG inflation had eased to 15 percent by December 2025, while the exchange rate remained stable at around 26 ZiG to the United States dollar.

Authorities say these developments support government’s long-term plan to move toward a mono-currency system by 2030, with the ZiG as the main unit of account.
