Severe floods in southern Mozambique have forced thousands to flee their homes, leaving some stranded on rooftops as rising waters sweep through towns and villages.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says more than 620,000 people have been affected, with over 72,000 houses flooded and roads, bridges, and health centres damaged.

IFRC Program Manager Rachel Fowler warns the rains are expected to continue, with dams already full, and relief access becoming increasingly difficult. Red Cross volunteers are using small boats to reach survivors, while South Africa has sent a helicopter to assist.

Hospital worker Celeste Maria, speaking from a resettlement centre in Chokwe, told Reuters news that her home is completely submerged, and neighbours remain stranded.

Mozambique President Daniel Chapo cancelled his Switzerland trip to attend World Economic Forum in Davos, emphasizing that saving lives is the government’s top priority at the moment.
