PHD Ministries leader Walter Magaya has been re-arrested in Harare, deepening uncertainty around a rape case that appeared close to collapsing, a development that raises fresh questions about how the matter will now proceed.
Magaya appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court earlier today for the start of his trial, where he is accused of raping two women. The court heard that one complainant has withdrawn her report, while the second is now based in Ireland. Prosecutors said communication challenges prevented her from travelling to Zimbabwe.
Magaya was placed on remand until early March. However, as he was leaving court, he was detained again.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the reason for the re-arrest.
