Several countries have tightened border controls and increased health screening measures following an outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
The World Health Organization says more than 900 suspected cases and 220 suspected deaths have been reported in the DRC since the outbreak was declared on May 15. Uganda has so far recorded seven confirmed cases, including one death.
The WHO has raised its national risk assessment for the DRC from high to very high, although the global risk level remains low.
Authorities in Uganda are continuing laboratory testing and contact tracing efforts, while the Congolese government has suspended flights to and from Bunia, one of the areas heavily affected by the outbreak. Humanitarian and emergency flights may still be allowed under special clearance.
Health experts are urging communities to remain alert and report suspected cases early as efforts to contain the outbreak continue across the region.
