The World Health Organization (WHO), working with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), has launched a six-month emergency response plan valued at US$518 million to combat the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighbouring Uganda.
The initiative will strengthen surveillance, border screening and rapid response measures in affected countries, while helping other nations prepare for possible cases.
Health authorities say the outbreak has become one of the largest on record and are calling for increased funding, stronger political commitment and greater community involvement to curb further spread.
Africa CDC says the outbreak went undetected for several weeks in its early stages, allowing the virus to spread before response teams could intervene.
The WHO and Africa CDC say coordinated action by governments, health organisations and communities remains critical to containing the outbreak and protecting vulnerable populations.
