“Children Living with Disabilities at the Center of El Niño Response Efforts: UNICEF”

Zimbabwe is currently grappling with the adverse effects of the El Niño-induced climate crisis, and UNICEF is taking proactive measures to address the impact on children. Under their climate change campaign, “Invest in Climate, Invest in Children,” UNICEF and the government are placing a special focus on children living with disabilities, recognizing them not just as vulnerable participants but as active contributors in policy-making and decision-making processes concerning the effects of El Niño.
During a recent media briefing in Bulawayo, Mr. Yves Willemot, UNICEF Chief of Communications, highlighted the collaborative efforts between the government, relevant ministries, UNICEF, and other developmental partners. They have been actively engaging with associations and parents of children living with disabilities to address their specific needs and ensure inclusivity in response efforts.
“Critical situations like the one Zimbabwe is going through now with El Niño are impacting all children negatively. At risk are younger children under the age of five, and among all children, there are those living with disabilities. So, we have tried to make sure that in our responses, we are informed by the specific challenges that children with disabilities are going through. To ensure this, UNICEF and the government have made sure that we are in constant liaison with them through relevant organizations and institutions that cater to children living with disabilities,” said Mr. Willemot.
In response to President Mnangagwa’s declaration of the El Niño-induced drought as a state disaster, UNICEF has launched an emergency appeal for $84.9 million. This funding aims to provide life-saving interventions to 1.34 million people, including 866,000 children, including those living with disabilities.
“Currently, our programs are internally funded through the United Nations relief funds. We are calling on donors to respond generously to our call for $84.9 million so we can scale up the programs at a time when the need is urgent,” he said.
The government, UNICEF, and partners are scaling up initiatives to develop climate-resilient programs.
