Cowdray Park councillors are calling for the relocation of the Richmond Landfill, also known as Ngozi Mine, due to the harmful smoke from continuous fires at the site.
Ward 28 Councillor Mr Ntandoyenkosi Ndlovu emphasized that the smoke poses serious health risks to residents, urging city authorities to find a solution.
“Ngozi mine has resulted in harmful smoke blanketing most parts of Cowdraypark and posing a serious risk to residents, particularly the elderly and children and those with respiratory conditions.
This situation has been ongoing for years and as councillors we can no longer stand by as our community suffers,we are calling for the immediate relocation of the Land fill to a safer and more remote location as it is clear that the current site is unsustainable and poses significant environmental and health hazards,as you know that our priority as councillors is to protect well being of Cowdraypark residents and there for we are urging city authorities to act swiftly to find a lasting solution to this problem, ” said Councillor Ndlovu.
Councillor Mrs Ntombizodwa Khumalo of Ward 23 suggested relocating the landfill to a more remote area, away from residential zones adding that authorities should install machines to maintain the landfill as it lacks proper management.
“The Landfill lacks proper management and essential equipment, hindering effective maintenance of the pit.Urgent repairs are needed for machinery like tippers and plant equipment to ensure the Landfill operates in a healthy and sanitary manner, ” added Councillor Khumalo.
Residents like Miss Babongile Moyo expressed frustration with the ongoing issue, stating they’re tired of inhaling the smoke.
“We are exhausted from inhaling toxic fumes from the Landfill.Every time garbage is burned, smoke invades our homes. We urge the authorities to relocate the Landfill, ” she said.
