Nkulumane Constituency Member of Parliament, Honorable Desire Moyo, has urged students to avoid drug and substance abuse as they prepare for the upcoming examination period.
This came during a public lecture on exam preparedness for writing classes that was held at Nkulumane High School yesterday.
In an interview with SkyzMetro FM on the sidelines of the event, Honourable Moyo said that the whole purpose of the lecture was to encourage students on preparedness of exams and to raise awareness on the issues of drug and substance abuse which is destroying the future of learners.
“We had come to the realisation that children especially those in writing classes face different challenges during this period. Some start engaging in drug and substance abuse because of peer pressure and for the sake of relieving stress which can easily shift their focus and thus it was important to get a close up with them and give them courage ahead of exams,” said Moyo.
Nkulumane High School headmistress Mrs Monica Ncube welcomed the initiative saying that the session was long overdue and it will play a key role in motivating the students as they prepare for their exams.
“We are thankful for what Honourable Moyo has done today for us and the community as a whole. This lecture is something that was long overdue and it will play a vital role in uplifting the spirits of the students as they prepare for their exams which are only a few weeks away, ” said Ncube.
Representing the students, Junior MP for Nkulumane Constituency, Honourable Sengeziwe Ndlovu also praised the MP’s efforts highlighting the positive impact that the lecture would have on the students, not only in terms of exam preparation but also in their broader outlook on life.
“The engagement of community leadership in schools is something which is much needed in learning institutions as many children come from child headed families and sometimes lack the proper guidance and these kind of programs helps in shaping the child’s future,” she added.
A total of 340 students in the school, are expected to sit for their O-Level exams, while 26 are registered for A-Level exams.
