Zimbabwe Rugby Rolls Out Ambitious Coach Development Programme

Over 100 aspiring rugby coaches gathered at Bulawayo’s Hartsfield Stadium for a free Level 1 coaching course, bankrolled by Zimbabwe Rugby and supported by World Rugby.

This initiative is part of a broader, ambitious programme aimed at significantly expanding the number of rugby coaches in the country.

Facilitated by Rueben Kumpasa, the course is designed to multiply the current pool of rugby coaches across Zimbabwe by over 1,000 by next year.

The programme has already seen success in several regions, with previous training sessions held in Gweru, Beitbridge, and Shurugwi.

“This initiative is crucial for the growth of rugby in Zimbabwe. By next year, we aim to train over 1,000 coaches who will spread their knowledge and passion for the game across the country,” said Kumpasa.

The development programme, endorsed by World Rugby, underscores Zimbabwe’s commitment to improving grassroots rugby through the education and empowerment of local coaches. This, in turn, is expected to increase participation and raise the standard of rugby in Zimbabwe, setting the foundation for the sport’s future growth.

“The support from World Rugby has been instrumental, and we are confident that with these courses, Zimbabwean rugby will reach new heights,” added Kumpasa.

The initiative is a significant step in addressing the growing demand for qualified rugby coaches in the country, ensuring that aspiring players from different regions have access to trained professionals. The next phase of the programme will see further expansion into rural areas, providing opportunities for even more communities to engage with the sport.
