Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, Mr Washington Zhakata has urged the Adaptation Fund to prioritize the needs of children in climate change adaptation efforts.

This comes after his recent appointment as the Vice Board Chair of the Adaptation Fund of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which seeks to provide financial assistance to developing countries vulnerable to climate change.

In an interview with SkyzMetro FM, Mr Zhakata said that the devastating consequences of climate change on children are far-reaching and often overlooked. Cyclones, droughts, and floods are disrupting education, healthcare, and mental well-being as many children are left orphaned, displaced, or living in extreme poverty, with limited access to essential services.

“We must address the specific vulnerabilities and impacts of climate change on our continent, particularly on our most vulnerable populations especially children who are disproportionately affected by climate change, yet their experiences are often overlooked,” he said.

“We need to dedicate a portion of the Adaptation Fund’s resources to address the unique challenges faced by children such as mental health, psychosocial issues, and lack of protection during disasters,” Zhakata highlighted.

Meanwhile Mr Zhakata also called for increased funding for climate adaptation in developing countries in the continent. He emphasized the need for reconstruction resources and compensation for loss and damage caused by extreme weather events.

He also advocated for stronger collaboration between the Adaptation Fund and the Loss and Damage Fund to ensure that vulnerable communities receive the support they need.
