The Consumer Protection Commission has launched a crackdown on businesses that lack Point-of-Sale (POS) machines, aiming to safeguard consumer rights and prevent unfair practices.
Dr. Mthokozisi Nkosi, Chairman of the Commission, emphasized that in Zimbabwe’s multi-currency economy, consumers should be free to choose their preferred payment methods, in line with the law.
“Consumers have the right to choose their payment method, and businesses must respect that right. It’s unacceptable for businesses to deny consumers the freedom to use their preferred currency or payment method, especially in a multi-currency environment. We must ensure that consumers exercise their rights and hold businesses accountable for fair and inclusive practices,” said Nkosi
Under the Consumer Protection Act and the Finance Act, businesses are required to offer POS or electronic payment options. The Commission has issued Compliance Notices to offending businesses and warned of penalties for continued non-compliance.
Consumers can report violations via hotline numbers +263 719 176 856/861/865, Netone toll-free number 08012301, or the call center at +263 867 701 0043.
