Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi has officially conceded defeat following a significant loss for the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in the primary parliamentary elections.

Speaking at a press conference after the results were announced, Masisi acknowledged the outcome, expressing relief at the end of his term and reflecting on the demanding nature of his role.

“I really enjoyed myself. It was tough work. I worked very hard. My typical day was very long. I worked 6 to 7 days a week. I have been working hard since 2019, trust me. I think, unexpected as it is may come as a good time to rest, “said Masisi.

Masisi also lauded the work that his government has done up to date, applauding the positive changes in agriculture and other sectors.

“I am proud of the agricultural programs we put in place, other programs, putting Batswana first and the structural adjustments we put on the economy,”

The BDP, which has governed Botswana for 58 years, managed to secure only one parliamentary seat.

The opposition party, Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), led by Duma Gideon Boko, claimed victory with 21 seats, positioning Boko as the most president-elect.

Meanwhile, Dumelang Saleshando of the Botswana Congress Party won 8 seats, and Mephato Reatile of the Botswana Patriotic Front secured 5 seats.

Masisi, who served as president since 2019, accepted the shift in power, marking a historic change in Botswana’s political landscape.
