17-Year-Old Miner Dies in Illegal Mining Accident

A tragic mining accident has claimed the life of 17-year-old Luckmore Sibanda, a resident of Lukala Village under Village Head Walter Ndlovu and Chief Mtshana.

According to a press release by the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Bulawayo, the incident occurred on 12 December around 3:00 PM. Luckmore’s father was informed that his son had been trapped in a shaft at Surnace Mine, Arda in Umguza.

Rushing to the scene, the family found Luckmore’s lifeless body pinned beneath a massive boulder approximately 200 meters inside the mine.

Despite efforts to retrieve the body, the operation was unsuccessful, prompting the family to report the matter to the police.

Investigations revealed that the mine was operating without a license, and Luckmore had been engaged in illegal mining activities. Authorities have since urged the public to avoid illegal mining, citing the grave dangers it poses to life and safety.
