The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has issued a stern warning to the public against illegal sand digging and excavation, citing severe environmental and public safety risks.

In an interview with Skyz Metro FM, BCC lands inspector Lawrence Mathwasa highlighted the dangers of sand poaching, including the exposure of water pipes and electric wires, which can lead to fatal accidents.

“Digging without permission in residential properties can result in electrical accidents. People might unintentionally cut into electrical wiring, exposing it. If an unsuspecting person comes into contact with the exposed wires, it can lead to fatal electrocution,” Mathwasa said.

He further revealed that last year, 38 people lost their lives after coming into contact with exposed electric wiring, and 45 others sustained injuries.

Beyond the safety concerns, Mathwasa explained that sand poaching significantly harms the environment, leading to land degradation, soil erosion, and disruption of the ecosystem’s natural balance.

Meanwhile, BCC urged residents to report illegal sand poaching activities to authorities to protect both lives and the environment.
