The South African music industry is mourning the loss of kwaito legend Doc Shebeleza, whose real name was Victor Bogopane. The 51-year-old artist passed away in hospital after a long battle with illness, as confirmed by his family.
Shebeleza made a profound impact on the kwaito scene with his debut album S’Kumfete, released in 1996. The album produced several iconic tracks, including Kum’nandi, Ebumnandini, and Ghetsa Ghetsa, making him a household name and a pioneer in the genre.
During the 1990s, he formed the all-male group Amaskumfete, whose hit Tsipa Tsipa further solidified Shebeleza’s place in kwaito history. His music, rich in personal narratives, resonated deeply with fans, capturing themes of relationships, struggle, and joy. Shebeleza’s influence shaped the trajectory of kwaito music, inspiring artists like Mandoza, Mapaputsi, and many others.
In recent years, Shebeleza shifted his focus to philanthropy, founding the Amaha organisation to uplift fellow artists and give back to the community that supported him throughout his career. His lasting legacy was celebrated in 2014 when Cassper Nyovest released the hit Doc Shebeleza, a chart-topping tribute to the artist’s enduring influence.
Shebeleza’s death marks the end of an era in South Africa’s music landscape.
