The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released its 2024-2025 festive season road traffic statistics, reporting a decrease in overall accidents but an increase in fatal incidents. Total accidents dropped from 3,607 in 2023-2024 to 2,936 this season, yet fatal accidents rose from 118 to 133.
The number of fatalities decreased slightly, from 162 to 155, while injuries surged from 821 to 938, raising concerns about the severity of the accidents.
A tragic highlight included an accident on December 31, 2024, where three people lost their lives, and ten others were injured when an Isuzu KB 250 side-swiped a Toyota Probox carrying 13 passengers. Additionally, two men were killed in separate hit-and-run incidents on January 1, 2025.
The ZRP is urging motorists to prioritize road safety, exercise caution, and remain vigilant, particularly at night. Drivers are also reminded to stop, assist victims, and report accidents to the police promptly.
