The body of a three-year-old boy who was swept away by flash-floods in Lobengula yesterday afternoon has been recovered. The child went missing after an reported attempt to cross the Emakhandeni Stream, which links Lobengula West and Luveve, during heavy rains that caused flash flooding across Bulawayo.

Bulawayo Fire Brigade Chief, Mhlangano Moyo, confirmed the discovery and urged residents to exercise caution during heavy rains.

“As the Fire Brigade, we are relieved to have managed to retrieve the body of the 3-year-old child who was swept away by the flash floods. However, we are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident. It is very painful. We urge all Bulawayo residents to not cross flooded areas. Please wait, and notify the police or the Fire Brigade so you can get the necessary emergency help,” said Moyo.

The tragedy occurred as the City of Bulawayo received multiple reports of flooding incidents. In a statement issued yesterday, BCC warned residents about the dangers of attempting to cross flooded streams, highlighting that the Pumula Stream was also dangerously overflowing. A search operation for the missing child was launched, leading to the recovery of the body.

Meanwhile, BCC has issued a flood safety warning, urging residents to avoid crossing flooded areas. The public has been advised not to walk in moving water, drive through flooded bridges, and to create weepholes in walls for proper drainage.

For emergencies, residents can contact 993/994, 07781593433, or 02922717179.
