The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) President, Nqobile Magwizi, has commended the Mighty Warriors for their spirited performance against Angola, despite their elimination from the Women Africa Cup Of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers in a dramatic penalty shootout.

After a 2-1 defeat in the away leg, the Mighty Warriors fought back with a determined 2-1 victory in Pretoria, forcing the tie to a nail biting penalty decider. Following nine successful penalties, goalkeeper Lindiwe Magwede’s missed attempt sealed Angola’s victory, leaving Zimbabwe heartbroken.

However, ZIFA President Magwizi remained optimistic about the team’s future stating that despite suffering a loss in the game, he believes the women’s side is on the right course and are capable of delivering good results in the coming games.

Addressing the media after the game, Magwizi emphasized the team’s strong showing citing that they gave a fantastic account of themselves and this game was vital in showing how much progress the team has made.

“While the result is disappointing,” Magwizi stated firmly, “I am incredibly proud of the Mighty Warriors. They gave a fantastic account of themselves, demonstrating tremendous resilience and determination in the game. And this performance,” he emphasized, “is a clear indication that we are on the right track.”

Looking ahead, Magwizi outlined plans to strengthen women’s football from the grassroots level highlighting that they are committed to investing in the development of young talent, which is crucial for the future success of the Mighty Warriors.

“We are committed to investing in the development of young talent,” he explained. “Building a strong foundation at the grassroots level is crucial for the future success of the Mighty Warriors.”
