Zimbabwe is currently participating in the Global AI Summit on Africa, which kicked off earlier today in Rwanda.

The summit focuses on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can drive economic growth, workforce development, and innovation across the continent through collaboration between governments, private sector players, and technology experts.

Representing Zimbabwe, Minister of Skills Audit and Development, Professor Paul Mavhima, highlighted the country’s commitment to harnessing AI for government efficiency, investment growth, and public-private partnerships.

“I am honoured to be representing the government of Zimbabwe at this Summit. There are going to be global players, companies, individuals, who are leading in this area of AI, so this is going to increase our own capacity in terms of developing the various aspects and intelligence of artificial intelligence. As you know, we are in the fourth industrial revolution. Digitalisation as well as AI are the future, so as a country, we have to be prepared to join the rest of the globe in adopting AI,” said Mavima

He also emphasized AI’s role in enhancing Africa’s workforce sustainability and positioning the continent for future economic opportunities.

“AI is important,” Professor Mavima said, “for purposes of enhancing efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness. As Zimbabwe, and indeed as Africa, we cannot be left behind in deploying this technology, which facilitates economic growth.”

The summit, which runs until April 5, 2025, is themed “AI and Africa’s Demographic Dividend: Reimagining Economic Opportunities for Africa’s Workforce.”
