Lupane Man Axes, Sets 72-Year-Old Woman on Fire Over Witchcraft Claims

In a shocking case of suspected witchcraft-fuelled violence, a 28-year-old man from Lupane has been arrested for attempting to murder a 72-year-old woman in a brutal axe and fire attack.
Sibongiseni Mfanaso Mpofu was apprehended by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on May 18, 2025, after allegedly striking elderly Christine Ncube on the head with an axe before dousing her with paraffin and setting her ablaze.
Police reports indicate that Mpofu believed the elderly woman had bewitched him—a suspicion that drove him to carry out the horrific attack.
Despite sustaining life-threatening burns, Ncube was rescued by villagers and rushed to St Luke’s Hospital before being transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital for advanced care.
The ZRP has confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
