A Zimbabwean man returning from South Africa has been brutally stabbed and robbed of R900,000 at his home in Matabeleland South, raising fresh concerns about the safety of cross-border returnees carrying cash.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) say the attack happened in Madlambuzi, where a gang of eight men allegedly forced their way into the victim’s house while he slept and stabbed him three times.

CID deputy spokesperson Detective Assistant Inspector Merylin Muriro says the suspects demanded money brought from South Africa and later forced the victim to surrender a larger sum hidden under the floor.

The gang fled with R900,000 in cash, two smartphones and other property, before briefly abducting the victim.

Police have arrested eight suspects and recovered over R239,000, while two others remain at large. The Zimbabwe Republic Police are urging the public to avoid keeping large sums of cash at home as investigations continue.
