The rapid spread of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo has raised serious concern, with medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) warning that the outbreak has reached a deeply alarming stage.
More than 1,000 suspected Ebola cases have been recorded in the country, while at least 246 people have died since the outbreak was declared two weeks ago. Neighbouring Uganda has also reported nine confirmed cases and one death linked to the virus.
MSF Deputy Director Dr Alan Gonzalez said the scale and speed of the outbreak were unprecedented, noting that never before had so many cases been recorded so soon after an Ebola outbreak declaration.
He said health workers on the ground were struggling to keep pace with the rapidly spreading epidemic, with new suspected cases being reported daily while hundreds of samples remained untested.
World Health Organization Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus visited the eastern province of Ituri, the epicentre of the outbreak, to oversee containment efforts and assess the response.
Dr Gonzalez said the true scale of the outbreak remains unknown, warning that delays in testing and case confirmation continue to hamper efforts to contain the disease.
