Matabeleland North Under-19 team gets kit boost ahead Of NASH tournament

Matabeleland North Under-19 cricket players have received a timely boost ahead of the NASH tournament in Gweru, following the donation of playing kits to the provincial team.

The team received the kit from private sponsors which include Mr Sinkwa, Cake Fairy and Oriental Pies, ahead of the tournament, which is scheduled to run from Thursday to Friday.

Speaking in an interview on the sidelines of the donation ceremony, Zimbabwe Cricket National Schools General Manager Nick Singo said the donation will help the players feel more comfortable and confident as they represent Matabeleland North at the tournament.

Singo said the support could also encourage more young people in the province to take up cricket, particularly in communities where the sport has had limited exposure.

“I hope the boys are going to be comfortable in the kit which they have been given, and they are going to represent Matabeleland North very well,” said Singo.

He added that Matabeleland North already has players who have been participating in cricket through basic community facilities, despite challenges in accessing proper grounds.

Singo further highlighted that Zimbabwe Cricket is hoping to attract more partners to help develop cricket facilities in schools and rural communities.

Meanwhile, Cricket Ekhaya-Kasi Director of Cricket Affairs and Operations Dumisani Mankunzini said the organisation also welcomed the donation saying it will go a long way in providing the team with necessary sports wear for the future tournaments.

He added that they are working to introduce cricket in communities where the sport has little or no presence while also aiming to keep young people away from drugs and crime while developing players, administrators and match officials.

“It is our wish and hope that every child in Zimbabwe gets a fair opportunity to hold the cricket ball and the cricket bat,” said Mankunzini.

Mankunzini said widening access to cricket could give more children an opportunity to develop sporting skills and pursue opportunities within the game.
