The Bulawayo Chess Association (BCA) is using chess to raise awareness about drug and substance abuse among young people, as it prepares to host its inaugural Bulawayo Chess Open tomorrow.
The two-day tournament runs from 31 October to 1 November at Agape College, bringing together players of different ages from three different cities which include Bulawayo, Harare and Kadoma.
Speaking to Skyz Metro FM, Tournament Chief Organiser Siza Brilliant Ndlovu said the event will combine competition with anti-drug awareness activities, supported by local churches.
“We want to see what we can build from the chess momentum we have gained. We can see that today’s youth are increasingly turning to drugs, excessive alcohol consumption, and wild parties, among other destructive behaviors, Siza said.
“Hence, we are trying to keep young people productively engaged through sport. This is the very first event of its kind, the Bulawayo Open,” he added.
The tournament will feature open, ladies and development sections, with cash prizes and equipment for top performers. The top under-20 player will also receive sponsorship to attend the Bulawayo Candidates Tournament in December.
Organisers are inviting schools, players and members of the public to attend.
