Businessman and philanthropist Wicknell Chivhayo has pledged a $1 million sponsorship to Highlanders Football Club, one of Zimbabwe’s most historic football teams. The deal begins with a $250,000 cash injection to assist with the club’s administrative needs and will be disbursed over the next 12 months.

Announcing the pledge on Facebook, Chivhayo wrote: “It is my greatest pleasure to avail sponsorship worth US$250,000 in cash to Highlanders FC, as my small token to assist the Club in its various administrative requirements.”

He added that the full amount will help the club sign new players and become more competitive in the 2025 Premier Soccer League.

Chivhayo said his commitment to Bosso stems from a lifelong emotional connection.

“Zimbabwe’s football history is certainly incomplete without mentioning the oldest club, Highlanders ‘Bosso’ FC,” he said. “It’s a phenomenal cultural icon that represents heritage, pride and unity, particularly for Bulawayo.”

He reflected on a recent visit to the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in Bulawayo, which rekindled childhood memories of his passion for the team.

“Spending time in Matebeleland reminded me of how we grew up as passionate lovers of football in general, and Highlanders FC in particular.”

Chivhayo also cited a moving final conversation with his uncle, the late Vice President John Landa Nkomo, who urged him to support Highlanders.

“He asked me to assist Highlanders FC in every possible way, to preserve its history and shape its future.”

In response to past concerns about financial accountability at the club, Chivhayo appointed businessman and relative Jabulani Nkomo to act in a curatorship role.

“His involvement will be to ensure the disbursement of this sponsorship aligns with the Club’s planned expenditures and strengthens player welfare and administration.”

Chivhayo concluded by aligning the initiative with national goals: “This also supports His Excellency President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, calling for collaboration between private businesses and government in socio-economic development.”

With the new season approaching, the sponsorship is expected to boost Highlanders FC’s competitiveness and long-term stability.
