Bulawayo City Council has proposed a US224.7 million budget for 2026, with water and sanitation once again topping the list of priorities.
The proposed budget was presented by Finance Committee Chairperson Dumisani Nkomo during a budget consultation meeting held yesterday.
Water and sanitation will receive the largest allocation, with US70.3 million proposed reflecting continued public demand for improved water services. Nkomo stated that priorities remain unchanged following public consultations, which confirmed water as an essential need.
“Key issues raised include the need for improvement in water supply hours, properly managing the sanitary landfill, controlling pollution, prioritisation of enforcement of regulations, decisive rectification of the proliferation of illegal activities in the city,” said Nkomo.
Governance and administration will take US60.4 million, while social services have been allocated US50.6 million.
Road rehabilitation will receive US18.9 million, and public safety and security services are set to get US21.5 million. Natural resources conservation and management will receive US2.8 million.
The 2026 budget continues to focus on the same areas as the 2025 plan with key issues being water, health, sewerage, housing, roads, education, public lighting, social services, and emergency services like fire and ambulances.
