Churches in Bulawayo are stepping up efforts to keep the city clean, after they joined the National Clean-Up Campaign in support of government calls for citizen-led environmental responsibility.
The clean-up brought together several church groups across the city, aligning with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s appeal for communities to clean their surroundings on the first Friday of every month.
Speaking during the exercise on Friday, Dorris Sibanda, Communications Director for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Bulawayo Stake, said the campaign is now in its third phase and is beginning to show positive results, with growing community participation.
Sibanda added that the initiative has expanded beyond churches to include members of the Muslim community and informal traders, reinforcing the idea of shared responsibility in keeping Bulawayo clean.
Meanwhile, Veneka, a participant in the Mister of Zimbabwe pageant who also took part, said clean and safe environments contribute to better mental health and overall well-being.
She noted that people are more likely to enjoy a better quality of life when their surroundings are clean and orderly.
