The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) says protecting children in news coverage is not optional, after a minor was reportedly interviewed in connection with a child abduction case in Bulawayo.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Media Commission reaffirmed its commitment to ethical journalism and safeguarding children’s rights. It said minors are a vulnerable group requiring special protection from reporting that may expose them to harm, stigma, exploitation or psychological distress.

The Commission was responding to an incident at Meikles Centre in Bulawayo involving a two-year-old child, where a minor who is said to be a suspect was interviewed.

ZMC stressed that media houses must protect the identity, privacy and best interests of children at all times, and avoid publishing identifying details or images. It warned that sensational reporting will not be condoned and urged strict adherence to child-sensitive ethical standards.
