Zimbabwe’s boxing community is in mourning after Ndodana “Black Hammer” Ncube, a promising boxer from Bulawayo, succumbed to serious head injuries in the early hours of Saturday morning in South Africa weeks after collapsing in a changing room following a bout in Mpumalanga.

Ncube had been fighting for his life in an intensive care unit since March, when he suffered a severe head injury during a professional fight. He was placed on life support but was taken off it a few days later. Despite some signs of stabilisation, he never fully recovered and passed away on 16 May 2026.

The Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board, together with the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, described his passing as “a profound loss to the boxing fraternity, the wider sporting community, and the nation at large.”Known in the ring for his power and heart, “Black Hammer” had carved out a reputation in Zimbabwean boxing as a fighter of rare dedication and courage.

The severity of his injury had already raised doubts about whether he would ever box again, but it was his survival that had been the focus of those close to him in his final weeks.

The ZNBWCB confirmed that Government had been engaged throughout Ncube’s treatment, stating: “From the time of his injury, Government, through the Ministry and the ZNBWCB, remained fully committed to ensuring he received the best possible medical care and support.”

The Board also recognised the role played by South African authorities and the broader sporting community, saying it “acknowledges and appreciates the support extended by Boxing South Africa, medical teams, promoters and all stakeholders who stood with Ndodana and his family during his treatment.”Ncube’s death is expected to intensify debate around fighter safety in combat sports across the region.

The ZNBWCB pledged to act, saying the Ministry and the Board “remain committed to strengthening athlete welfare, safety standards and medical preparedness in combat sports.”

Funeral arrangements are yet to be confirmed and will be announced in consultation with his family.”Ndodana will be remembered for his dedication, courage, disciplin, and contribution to the sport of boxing in Zimbabwe,” the Board said. “May his soul Rest in Eternal Peace.”
