Young people have been urged to preserve their cultural heritage and promote unity through diversity during Africa Day celebrations hosted by Advent Hope Group of Schools under the theme Celebrating our African identity; embracing diversity inspiring unity.
Speaking at the commemorations, Dr Tendai Takawira said Africa Day should inspire Africans to take pride in their roots and understand their history, warning that abandoning African identity would weaken future generations.
He said Africans should celebrate Africa Day without shame, adding that any nation, people, family or institution that ignores its history does so at its own peril.
Dr Takawira said the commemorations were not merely ceremonial, but a reminder for Africans to embrace their cultures, languages and indigenous knowledge systems while promoting unity despite differences.
He added that Africans must embrace diversity and inspire unity, stressing that there should be unity in diversity and not unity in uniformity.
The celebrations saw young people embracing their African identity through cultural activities aimed at promoting social cohesion and appreciation of African heritage.
