Nigeria has warned that it may review some of the privileges enjoyed by South African businesses and citizens in the country following renewed xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the Federal Government was dissatisfied with what it described as the inadequate response of South African authorities to attacks on Nigerians and other African migrants.
Reports indicate that homes, shops and businesses belonging to Nigerians have been looted, vandalised and set on fire, while many victims continue to face harassment and intimidation.
The minister rejected claims that those affected were undocumented migrants, stressing that many are legally resident in South Africa and operate legitimate businesses. She also expressed concern that the attacks appeared to be directed mainly at black African migrants.
Nigeria further noted that the situation was particularly troubling given its historical support for South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle. The government said it is considering its diplomatic options and has not ruled out stronger measures if the attacks continue.
