Residents in Cowdray Park’s Eqaqeni area were left in shock after they discovered a baby boy dumped in a Blair toilet on Monday morning.
Speaking to Skyz Metro fm news one of the residents Samu Nzima , said she was alerted by her son who was on his way to school that there was a baby crying in the toilet.
She said , “I was busy going about my usual business when my son who was on his way to school came back home to tell me that he had heard a baby crying in the pit inside the toilet. I went over to check and also heard the baby crying from inside the pit . I then went round the neighbourhood informing others about the discovery. I am happy that the response was overwhelming as residens gathered and we started advising each other how best we can pull the baby out of the toilet”.
Another resident Sheperd Moyo who assisted with the rescue mission said they helped pull out the baby boy who was alive and rushed him to the hospital.
“When i arrived at the scene the baby was crying and we were wondering how were going to get him out. One of the guys came with a wire which we used to hook the baby’s clothing and pull him up. I was forced to use my bare hands to pull him out of the pit. He was filled with maggots and some women brought hot water to wash them off . After that we then rushed him to the surgery nearby”.
Meanwhile residents identified the mother of the baby as a woman from Mzilikazi who frequently visits one of the families close to the place where the baby was dumped.
The mother is now in custody and Bulawayo Police are yet to comment on the matter.
