South African former president Jacob Zuma has been suspended from the African National Congress he once led after refusing to vote for it and launching a rival organization.

Announcing the development yesterday, ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula said Zuma’s conduct is in conflict with values and principles of the party.

“The ANC concludes on an immediate decision to suspend former ANC President Jacob in-line with Rule 25.60 of the party constitution”, Mbalula stated.

Zuma was the fourth president of democratic South Africa, serving from 2009 to 2018,but was forced from office under a cloud of corruption allegations, and he has become estranged from the party he once led.

In December, he declared he would campaign for a new party, uMkhonto We Sizwe or Spear of the Nation, named after ANC’s former armed wing during the Anti-apartheid struggle.
