Zimbabwean authorities have successfully battled an attempt to smuggle mbanje and illegal cough syrup into the country through the Beitbridge Border Post.

The exact street value of the seized drugs is yet to be determined, but their destination was reported to be Bulawayo.

According to sources, a South African-registered vehicle was stopped on Tuesday after officials detected it carrying 28kg of mbanje. The driver fled the scene upon realizing he was caught. Further searches revealed a hidden compartment within the vehicle’s trailer containing additional mbanje packaged in smaller quantities, along with cartons of Benlyn cough syrup, which is often misused for its psychoactive properties.

Acting Beitbridge District Police Superintendent Philisani Ndebele confirmed the bust but declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing investigation.

This seizure comes amidst growing concern over Zimbabwe’s drug abuse problem. Vice President Constantino Chiwenga recently addressed the issue during a visit to Beitbridge, highlighting the government’s worries and its efforts to combat the situation. He emphasized the potential dangers of unchecked drug abuse for the nation’s youth and their future.

To address this growing problem, the government has established an Inter-Ministerial Committee tasked with developing strategies and coordinating a national response to curb drug and substance abuse in Zimbabwe.
