Zimbabwe registered an opening win at the Hollywood Bets Cosafa Cup 2024 competition after beating Comoros 1-0 in Gqeberha, South Africa yesterday.

Interim head coach Jairos Tapera had lost his two matches in the Fifa World Cup Qualifier 2026 and was in charge of a Warriors team now ranked at 38 in Africa.

Michael Tapera scored the solitary goal in the 53rd minute after a cagey opening first half. The Manica Diamonds forward flicked home with his right foot a cross from Tinotenda Meke.

Comoros tried to respond and had Kassim Hadji’s overhead kick in the hour mark parried away by Warriors goalkeeper Raphael Pitisi.

Tapera’s goal was enough to hand the warriors the much needed opening three points which saw them occupy the second spot in group B, only behind Kenya who beat Zambia 2 nil yesterday.

The COSAFA cup games continue today with Lesotho taking on Seychelles at NMB Stadium at 3pm while Angola faces Namibia in the same venue at 6pm.
