Labour law consultant David Ndumiso Sibanda has urged employers to establish formal employment agreements with their domestic workers, highlighting the need for improved working conditions and fair remuneration.

Sibanda emphasized that domestic workers often face excessive overtime, inadequate rest, and lack of formal agreements, which can lead to exploitation.

He stressed that employees should not work over 48 hours a week, as per labour laws, and that employers should compensate them for overtime.

“The law requires a written agreement outlining terms of employment, including working hours, compensation for overtime, and fair remuneration,” Sibanda said. “Verbal agreements are problematic, as they lack proof of what was agreed upon.”

Sibanda also highlighted the importance of protecting domestic workers’ rights and promoting a conducive working environment. He cited the Zimbabwean labour laws, which stipulate minimum salaries for domestic workers, including:

  • USD $85 for gardeners
  • USD $90 for maids
  • USD $100 for caregivers of the elderly or disabled

Adding that employers should provide USD $50 for accommodation and USD $26 for transport allowance for domestic workers who do not live on the premises.

Local resident Ms Memory Ndlovu echoed Sibanda’s sentiments, saying, “Maids’ salaries should match their workload and be limited to agreed-upon tasks. They should not be exploited or perform tasks outside their job description.”

Sibanda said his aim was to promote a more equitable and respectful environment for domestic workers.
