A total of 74 road accidents have been recorded in Bulawayo Central Business District (CBD) within a single week.
According to Inspector Abednego Ncube, Bulawayo Provincial Spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), reckless driving and blatant disregard for road rules are the primary culprits behind this alarming surge in crashes.
“This week alone, there have been 74 accidents that show that people cannot drive properly on the road. The serious accidents where people were injured are 20. People we call breadwinners who are now unable to take care of their families,” Inspector Ncube lamented.
The accidents have resulted in 11 serious cases, with 20 breadwinners sustaining severe injuries that threaten their ability to provide for their families. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, but 63 minor accidents were reported, in what Ncube said was an underscoring of the urgent need for road safety education and awareness amongst residents.
Inspector Ncube painted a grim picture of the situation, highlighting the reckless behavior of pedestrians and cyclists.
“People cross the road while answering calls. Some would be on WhatsApp in the middle of the road. Cyclists are brave enough to compete on the road with cars, bumper to bumper with cars,” said Ncube.
While emphasizing the importance of road safety awareness and the dangers of careless driving, Inspector Ncube stressed that pedestrians and cyclists are equally responsible for their actions on the road. “They are as responsible as motorists for what happens on the road,” he said.
