India has dispatched a substantial shipment of 1,000 metric tonnes of rice to Zimbabwe, aiming to alleviate the country’s severe food security crisis.

The humanitarian aid, which departed from Nhava Sheva Port, responds to the United Nations’ concerns about worsening food insecurity in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe has been experiencing a dire humanitarian situation due to the El NiƱo-induced drought, prompting President Emerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa to declare a nationwide state of disaster in April. India’s assistance is part of its efforts to support countries in the region grappling with food shortages.

In addition to Zimbabwe, India has also provided aid to Zambia and Malawi, supplying 1,300 metric tonnes of maize and 1,000 metric tonnes of rice, respectively.
