The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is currently conducting a two-day Export Readiness Training for Youth and Women-Led Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Bulawayo, aimed at empowering them to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) and the digital economy.

The initiative which aims to support the government’s vision of becoming an Upper Middle-Income Society by 2030, seeks to address key objectives such as raising awareness of AfCFTA opportunities, establishing trade hubs, streamlining trade processes, and providing digital skills training.

Dr Ayodele Odusola, UNDP Resident Representative, said that AfCTA presents a significant opportunity for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises in Zimbabwe to access the 1.3 billion African market, with business opportunities potentially arising across the continent.

“The issue of focusing on localized markets of a few hundred thousand people limits growth potential. However, access to the African market holds great potential not only for business growth, but also for job creation, with a positive impact on overall economic growth in the country,” Dr Odusola added.

Speaking during the event, Ms Ethel Bangwayo an economist emphasized the importance of equal opportunities for local businesses without barriers or hindrances.

“The Afcta seeks to reduce nd remove barries to trade and once those barries have been dealt with, it means that anyone from across the continent can come in and compete with local businesses and thus increasing competition which will ensure that there is improved quality, reduced cost in terms of products that will be in the market,” said Mis Bangwayo.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sungano Chisina from the National Youth Council added that there is need for youth participation in business and international export markets.

“With the AfCTA set to be put in motion, there is need for youths to take up the opportunity in the export market and thus this training program will equip young enteprenuers with necessary skills to increase their market reach while contributing to the country’s economic growth,” added Chisina.

The training, which began in Harare, will continue in other provinces across Zimbabwe, aiming to equip youth and women-led MSMEs with the necessary skills to compete in the global market.
