President Emmerson Mnangagwa has reaffirmed his commitment to Zimbabwe’s constitutional provisions, ruling out a third term as Head of State.
Arccording to the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services updates, the president revealed this yesterday while addressing the diaspora community in Beijing emphasizing his dedication to democratic values and the rule of law.
Having served two terms, with the most recent election held in August 2023, President Mnangagwa’s second term is set to conclude in 2028.
He took office in November 2017, succeeding former President Robert Mugabe, and won the 2018 and 2023 harmonized elections as the ZANU PF presidential candidate.
Zimbabwe’s Constitution (2013) Section 95, stipulates a five-year presidential term, while Section 91 disqualifies individuals who have already held the office for two terms from seeking re-election. With a year into his second term, President Mnangagwa’s assurance aligns with the constitutional limit.
This commitment reinforces his pledge to entrench democratic values, ensuring a smooth transfer of power and maintaining Zimbabwe’s democratic trajectory.
