Prosper Taurai Mpofu, a fake doctor who had been posing as a licensed medical practitioner appeared before the Bulawayo magistrate Nomagugu Maphosa this afternoon.

Mpofu is facing charges of fraud and illegally selling prescription pills without a license.

He was arrested on 16 September following complaints from patients who received suspicious treatments and prescriptions. Investigations revealed that he had been masquerading as a doctor at Mpilo Hospital, where he took advantage of unsuspecting victims. Despite having attended medical school, Mpofu dropped out before completing his studies but used his knowledge to deceive patients.

One victim, Faith Hove, paid Mpofu USD$150 for treatment, only for him to abscond with her money. Another victim, Samantha Dziki, paid him USD$1600 in April, believing Mpofu could secure her a place at Mpilo Nursing School, which he had promised and guaranteed. After receiving the money, Mpofu disappeared.

The case has been postponed to tomorrow at 8am for Mpofu’s bail and case hearing.
