A Safeguard cash-in-transit vehicle was ambushed and robbed of USD$4 million on Thursday afternoon at Ecobank Parkade Centre on corner Fife Street and 9th Avenue.

The brazen heist, carried out by a gang of six armed men, occurred just after 3PM, leaving authorities and onlookers in shock.

The robbers, who arrived at the scene in a white pickup truck bearing the registration number AGP 2333, swiftly launched their attack.

According to Zimbabwe Republic Police national police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the suspects opened fire upon arrival, forcing the Safeguard security team to the ground without much resistance.

The assailants, masked to conceal their identities, seized six trunks of cash which the Safeguard security personnel had got from the bank.

The commissioner said no one was injured during the incident, but the ease and speed with which the robbers executed the heist have led police to suspect an inside job.

“Given how quickly and efficiently this crime was carried out, we are looking into the possibility of internal collusion,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

Authorities are currently combing through security footage and seeking witnesses as they intensify the manhunt for the suspects. The robbery has sent ripples through Bulawayo’s business community, where cash-in-transit services are a daily necessity.

Police are urging the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity related to the heist. Further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
