Bulawayo is bracing for harsher water shortages as the Bulawayo City Council has increased its water shedding schedule from 120 to 130 hours per week, effective Wednesday, 9 October.
The escalation follows the decommissioning of Upper Ncema Dam on 2 October, after its water levels plummeted to a mere 2.08%, rendering it unusable.
The decision, while severe, is a step back from an even harsher 144-hour water shedding proposal that was debated during the 3384th Full Council Meeting. However, the increased rationing hours reflect the deepening water crisis, with no immediate relief in sight for the city’s nearly two million residents.
City officials have warned residents to use the limited water supplies with extreme caution. Urgent calls have been made for households to repair any leaking taps and limit water usage strictly to essential needs. Despite assurances that the increased water shedding is temporary, the council has not provided a clear timeline for when conditions might improve
