The Bulawayo City Council has issued a strong warning to residents about the dangers of crossing flooded streams and rivers during the rainy season.

Mr. Mhlangano Moyo, Chief Fire Officer for Bulawayo Fire and Ambulance Services, issued the caution during the City Matters segment on Skyz Metro FM, urging residents to avoid crossing rivers, even if they appear shallow.

“During the 2022-23 season, a cart attempting to cross the Phekiwe River in Nkulumane 12 was swept away by the current. Both the Phekiwe and Umguza Rivers, located in Bulawayo, have claimed many lives. We often underestimate these rivers, but they end up causing significant pain and grief,” said Moyo.

He referred to a report from the Meteorological Services Department forecasting average to above-average rainfall for the region this season, raising the risk of river flooding and stream overflows.

Moyo also stressed the importance of parental vigilance, particularly for children who cross rivers and streams on their way to school.

“Parents, it’s crucial to watch over our children during this period. If it has rained, parents should arrange for an adult to accompany children home. We also urge school teachers to ensure children take safe, high-level routes on their way home,” Moyo emphasized.

Recalling tragic events from the previous season, Moyo noted that several lives were lost while attempting to cross the Phekiwe and Umguza Rivers. In 2023, a police officer drowned trying to drive through the Phekiwe River, and two primary school children lost their lives crossing the Umguza River.
