The government has allocated USD$3 million to support emergency interventions aimed at alleviating Bulawayo’s ongoing water crisis, with a focus on improving the city’s water pumping capacity.

The funds are specifically designated for urgent upgrades at the Umzingwane and Inyankuni pump stations.

This was revealed by the Minister of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion, Professor Mthuli Ncube during a recently held pre-budget seminar in Bulawayo. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the city’s water challenges.

The Bulawayo City Council had initially requested USD$15 million. The government has since released an initial USD$1.5 million to address immediate needs, including the installation of new pumps and the refurbishment of existing ones at both pump stations.

“We have installed two new pumps and refurbished two others at Umzingwane, while two new pumps have been installed at Inyankuni. Further refurbishments are ongoing and expected to be completed by the end of November 2024,” said Professor Ncube.

In addition to these improvements, the government is also providing interim water supplies to the city while work continues on the Gwayi-Shangani Dam project.

Another USD$1.5 million has been allocated for renewing water mains, replacing valves, and reducing non-revenue water to increase supply to residents.

“The funds are being released in phases, and while work is ongoing, we are committed to supporting Bulawayo both in the short and long term,” Professor Ncube added.
