A 6.6% increase in enrollment has been recorded in Zimbabwean students attending U.S. universities for the 2023-2024 academic year, solidifying the United States as one of the top three destination countries for Zimbabweans studying abroad, after South Africa and the United Kingdom.
According to the 2024 Open Doors Report by the Institute of International Education, there are currently 1,907 Zimbabwean students enrolled in U.S. institutions. Of these, 49% are undergraduates, 32% are graduate students, 18% are involved in optional practical training (OPT), and the remaining 1% are enrolled in non-degree programs.
Graduate programs have seen a notable 15% increase compared to the previous year. The U.S. Embassy has played a crucial role in facilitating this educational exchange through its EducationUSA advising program, providing guidance to aspiring Zimbabwean students in identifying suitable U.S. universities and navigating the application process.
In a statement released yesterday, the U.S. Embassy highlighted that the growing number of Zimbabweans pursuing academic opportunities abroad reflects the deepening ties between the two nations, particularly in the 25 years of operation of the EducationUSA program.
Additionally, the Embassy offers Opportunity Funds to high-achieving, low-income students, alleviating financial burdens associated with applications and travel. Beyond academics, the U.S. Embassy also supports various exchange programs, offering Zimbabweans opportunities for professional development and cultural exchange. Over 100 Zimbabweans participated in fully-funded U.S. exchange programs last year.
